RKM Moscow Guided Tour - 1

RKM_Save Urban Heritage will begin its series of guided tours to visit examples of Constructivist and Avant-garde architecture in Moscow. The RKM_Guided Tours are designed to raise awareness about the safeguarding and future use of this cultural heritage. The first tour was started at the northern exit from the 'Leninsky Prospect' metro station (direction Ordzhonikidze street). The tour was passed through the most interesting avant-garde buildings in the area around the Shukhov Tower. Highlights of the tour include the Communal Hostel by architect I. Nikolaev, the "Khavsko-Shabolovsky" Residential Complex and the Moskvoretsky Mostorg Department Store on Lyusinovskaya Street. The EU-sponsored project RKM_Save Urban Heritage intends to demonstrate that avant-garde architectural heritage can be a powerful agent for stimulating not only social and cultural growth, but also the economic development of communities. RKM aims to develop an awareness of the importance of safeguarding, valorising and promoting architectural heritage and urban fabric in the cities of Kiev and Moscow, building awareness amongst administrations, key stakeholders and local residents about the cultural and economic value of such a cause. The RKM_Guided Tours, organised by architects and urban anthropologists for RKM, examine social and architectural realties in the two target cities, highlighting the historical and cultural value of avant-garde heritage.
