www.TravelsWithSheila.com Steve and I were going to visit Babi Yar on a private, guided tour with Valentina from Kievcitytours, accessing that important site by using the Metro; one Metro entrance happened to be in Independence Square. We walked a few short blocks from The InterContinental Hotel to important Independence Square where very knowledgeable Valentina told about its history. Other Kiev sights in this video were seen on the way back from Babi Yar when we exited at another Metro stop. A more intensive tour of Kiev would be included the next day as part of the Viking River Cruise. Keep watching...
www.TravelsWithSheila.com It was certainly easier getting the hang of the Kiev's Metro System with guide Valentina from Kievcitytours.com at our side. Pay 2 Grivnas (.24 cents US Euro) at the Kasa booth and receive a token good for one ride, any distance, and unlimited interchanges. Approach the turnstile, insert token and walk through when the light turns green. Don't wait for any flashing buttons or any other mechanical gizmos to happen. I suggest asking your hotel or guesthouse to write down destinations in Cyrillic to make it easier. You could then show the paper to a local to double check that, yes indeed, that was the proper Metro. Built in typical Russian style, many of the stations are quite beautiful but not as beautiful as those in Moscow. My favorite was the stations with typical Russian slogans... The Metro is clean, safe and easy to navigate once you realize that all three lines (red, blue and green) go through the city center. Give this cheap and efficient system a try...
