Kiev Collector Gathers 10000 Pairs of ShoesAt first glance, the apartment of Nikolai Belchenko is no different from others in his area. But this is only from the outside. It is practically impossible to move here. Shoes are everywhere—on the shelves, on the balcony and even on the chandelier. Kiev collector Nikolai Belchenko managed to collect nearly 10000 pairs of shoes from all around the world. And this is only one fifth of his collection. The rest of the collection is stored in the garage, shoe shop and cottage. [Nikolai Belchenko, Collector]: (male) "After the war I became thrifty, I didn`t throw anything away. And if I found something interesting and simple - I kept it, repaired, worn and never threw away." The shoemaker in the fourth generation, after the war, he dreamed of one pair of boots. After collecting shoes for 30 years, now the 75-year old Nikolai Belchenko wants to create a museum of shoes, as there is a story behind each pair. [Nikolai Belchenko, Collector]: (male) "This boot I've seen in literature. It reminds me of the boots of Katherine the Second. She had the very same." These sock boots were worn in 1970s. And these are the shoes of the American army. There are also sandals, which Japanese women had, and northern boots made of dog fur. The most ancient specimen dates from the beginning of the twentieth century, with leather sole and wooden nails. Nikolai gets some things new, but some things he has to repair.
